Should we continue to celebrate Kanye West's musical performances despite his public controversies?

Side A

I believe that we have to be able to separate the art from the artist, especially when that art has shaped an entire generation. When an artist performs a song like 'Runaway' to a crowd of 80,000 people, it isn't just about the person on stage—it's about the collective emotional experience of everyone in that stadium. Music has a vulnerability that speaks to people's deepest insecurities and struggles. When a performer ends a show with words of comfort, it provides a sense of community and healing for fans who have grown up with that work. We shouldn't have to discard the profound impact music has on our lives just because the creator's personal life and public statements are messy. Art is a gift to the world that exists independently of the person who created it once it is shared. To deny ourselves that connection because of the artist's flaws is to lose out on some of the most moving cultural moments of our time. We can acknowledge someone's mistakes while still appreciating the genius and the comfort their performances provide to thousands.

Side B

I strongly disagree. We live in a world where attention and money are the ultimate forms of validation, and by filling a stadium with 80,000 people to cheer for a controversial figure, we are essentially saying that their harmful actions and rhetoric do not matter. You cannot separate the art from the artist when the artist uses their platform to spread hate or misinformation. Every ticket sold and every viral clip of a 'comforting' moment serves to rehabilitate an image without the individual having to truly account for the damage they have caused. It is easy to get swept up in the nostalgia of a classic song, but we have to ask ourselves what we are complicit in when we continue to provide this level of support. Giving someone a stage and a microphone allows them to maintain a position of influence that they have proven they cannot handle or respect. True accountability means walking away, even when it is difficult, and recognizing that no amount of musical talent excuses the real-world harm that words and actions can inflict on various communities.
